Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky Bottled by: Douglas Laing 70cl / 42.9%
A very impressive 30-year-old single malt from Speyside Distillery, bottled by Douglas Laing for their prestigious Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range.
Distilled in May 1992 and bottled in March 2023 at 30 years old, this whisky was matured in a single sherry butt, cask DL17240, which yielded 538 hand-filled bottles. This particular example is Bottle No. 1. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 42.9%, with no added colouring or chill filtration.
Speyside Distillery began production near Kingussie in 1990, making this 1992 vintage a particularly early example of the distillery's whisky. The historic site closed in 2025 following the expiry of Speyside Distillers' lease, with the company subsequently describing Speyside as a lost distillery. Production is intended to relocate to a new site at Strathmashie under a different distillery name, meaning whisky distilled at the original Speyside Distillery represents a finite chapter in its history.
Douglas Laing's tasting notes highlight spiced and macerated fruits on the nose, followed by sultanas, mint and gently oaked flavours on the palate, with walnuts, sweet dates and molasses on the finish.
A fascinating old sherry-matured Speyside Distillery, distilled just two years after production began and now representing whisky from one of Scotland's newest lost distilleries.
Please Note: This bottle is a part of a large batch of bin-ends we recently picked up at a great price, enabling us to pass on savings to our customers. However, only one or two bottles of each product were included in the parcel - so when they’re gone they’re gone! Please note that due to the size and nature of this batch of stock, some labels and boxes may show signs of wear.

Aroma has subtle hints of sherry, vanilla and smoke. This is a dark, smooth and oily whisky - I noticed flavours of dark chocolate, tar, peat and salt. The real character comes through in the aftertaste - lingering peat and salt. Unmistakably Islay, and superb!
Bunnahabhain is my favourite range of unpeated whisky, there are many choices. My initial taste was a little disappointing but the high strength 8 year old whisky gave another choice. I would buy again on reflection.
