The latest edition of the very popular heavily peated Octomore bottlings have arrived and with the 10.3 this is as close as you can get to "single estate" whisky.
Malted to 114ppm and distilled in 2013 from 100% Octomore Farm Islay grown Concerto barley from the 2012 harvest.
It has been matured solely on Islay for 6 years in first-fill bourbon casks from Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Jack Daniel's and Buffalo Trace.

Tasting Notes
Official Notes Nose: Earthy peat smoke, dry and a little medicinal, lemon drops, and thyme come through and then marine, seashell notes along with some vanilla and fudge from the oak. Palate: Salt on the lips and more honey and lemon on the palate, then the peat sweeps in with the oak and heat from the high strength. Deeper flavours from the spirit, pear and gooseberry are more defined and richer. Finish: Sweet on the finish initially with pastry and chocolate but then bitter notes of rubbery smoke and spice towards the end. Colour – Pale straw.

Admittedly, I haven't tried every whisky in the world. I like the Laphroaig, peaty and uncompromising end of the single malt scale. This is my current favourite. A brutal and beautiful drink. Harsh and refined; sour and sweet. Dangerously tasty. A real find for me, this one.
I acquired mine after someone had poured it away, and used the empty as a candle holder. Despite imbibing this Glenrothes from a drain, it was decent. 57.1% seemed to remove any of the drain ickiness. It has also somewhat dulled the pain I'm still in from recently trapping my, ahem, in my zipper.
