Description
Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky Bottled by: Douglas Laing 70cl / 54.1%
A superb old Glen Grant from Douglas Laing’s Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range, distilled in May 1998 and bottled in July 2023 after 25 years of maturation.
This Glen Grant 1998 was drawn from a single refill barrel, cask DL17784, yielding just 193 bottles at a natural cask strength of 54.1%. As with other XOP releases, it was bottled without added colouring or chill filtration.
Glen Grant’s elegant, fruit-forward spirit is particularly well suited to long maturation, and the distillery has an enviable reputation for its old whiskies. Douglas Laing’s tasting notes describe a robust Speyside style with citrus fruit, barley, autumnal fruit, subtle oak, butterscotch, cherry and marzipan, followed by a finish of macerated red fruit and attractive cereal and spice.
A beautifully mature, cask-strength Glen Grant from one of Douglas Laing’s flagship single cask ranges, with only 193 bottles produced.

Nose: Opens in a robust archetypal Speyside style with hues of citrus fruit plus mixed unsalted nuts, barley and later autumnal fruit.
Palate: Subtle oak on the palate as it opens, now with a little cheek- puckering saltiness, ahead of butterscotch, cherry and marzipan flavours, dusted with icing sugar.
Finish: A finish carrying more macerated, red fruit mixed amongst attractive cereal and spices.

Aroma has subtle hints of sherry, vanilla and smoke. This is a dark, smooth and oily whisky - I noticed flavours of dark chocolate, tar, peat and salt. The real character comes through in the aftertaste - lingering peat and salt. Unmistakably Islay, and superb!
Bunnahabhain is my favourite range of unpeated whisky, there are many choices. My initial taste was a little disappointing but the high strength 8 year old whisky gave another choice. I would buy again on reflection.
