It was a sign of blended malt's growing rehabilitation when Famous Grouse introduced this 40-year-old in 2013. Blended malt had been almost dead after the Cardhu debacle of 2003-4, and after that it was only Compass Box and, bizarrely, Johnnie Walker Green Label that were flying the flag for the category formerly known as vatted malt whisky.
A really sublime marriage of several stunning malts which began in 1971, the selected casks being all over 40 years of age, Famous Grouse 40-year-old blended malt shows how skilful judgement on the part of a blender can produce a whisky much greater than the sum of its individual parts. This level of quality is very scarce, unfortunately - just 276 bottles of this incredible whisky were released.
Bottled at a deeply drinkable 47%, this Famous Grouse 40-year-old is all about balance, the wonderful and elegant mix of single malts all distilled in 1973 or earlier brought together in an extraordinarily harmonious whisky.
No single aroma or flavour dominates: the natural wood spice element of long aged malts is given freshness by the fruitier and peatier components, just as the wood itself offers structure and complexity throughout. A one-off gem of a whisky, well worth acquiring and tasting.
Includes certificate of authenticity and all original packaging.

on the nose a wee hint of Tormore and then and then Sherry, notes of stewed plum, a wee hint of spice and some oak.
On the palate the sherry is very mighty, doesn't leave much space for other notes. A mouthfull of pleasure with a short to medium finish. That is with the first sip, the more you have, you get a layer in your mouth, smooth but lasting.
A Smashin' dram at an nice price in Cask Strength, a bit to heavy on the Sherry side. Perfect to sit down at sundown and just simply enjoy... :-)
I bought this for my husband who loves peaty whiskies. He was impressednot only by the peat flavour but also the smoothness - I think it could become a new favourite.
