Fresh off the back of winning Independent Bottler of the Year 2020 we have this delightful first-fill sherry butt Caol Ila from North Star Spirits as part of their late 2020 batch of releases.
Distilled in 2009 and matured in a single first-fill oloroso sherry butt, this whisky was bottled 11 years later at a cask strength of 58.2% and with a yield of just 410 bottles.
The number of quality indie bottlings coming out of Caol Ila in recent years is phenomenal and this whisky is up there with the best, well done North Star.

Nose: Fireworks and citrus Cuban smoke. Palate: Lemon sherbet, white pepper and vanilla pod sweetness. Finish: Smoky cranberry and pistachio ice cream.

An exciting deep rich brown coloured liquid.
A compote of fruit together with dried grapes is lovely on the tongue.
Nicely sweetened syrup is evident too.
Invested in two bottles but will be ordering a third.

I know I bought a cask strength whisky but was expecting a nice taste but the strength overpowered the flavor, I found it harsh, but I am not a whiskey conasur. I also bought the secret Orkney signatory cask strength and that was very nice.
