Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Signatory Vintage 70cl / 52%
Caledonian in Edinburgh is another lost Lowland grain distillery, closing its doors in 1988 and with the site subsequently redeveloped for housing - today little more than the distillery's towering smokestack remains.
During its operational lifetime, Caledonian supplied grain whisky for DCL blends but was deemed surplus to requirements after the Guinness takeover. Thankfully there are still some casks remaining, though how many more there'll be is anyone's guess.
Kudos to Signatory, then, for digging up this splendid 32-year-old Caledonian distilled in 1987, the year before the distillery's closure. 204 bottles have survived the intervening decades in cask 23482 at a natural cask strength of 52%.
