A special single cask Bowmore 1997 25-year-old Islay single malt whisky, bottled by Douglas Laing in August 2022 for their prestigious Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range.
Distilled in July 1997 and matured for 25 years in a refill butt, this Bowmore was selected for the 10th Anniversary of Scotia Spirit, the Scotch whisky shop and bar in Cologne, Germany. Cask DL18122 was bottled in August 2022 at a natural cask strength of 47.6%, without colouring or chill filtration, with this release being one of just 39 hand-filled bottles.
The label describes notes of toffee, sea salt and lemon zest, with cured meats and barley – a suitably maritime profile for long-aged Bowmore. A particularly small outturn from a well-aged 1990s Bowmore single cask, presented as part of Douglas Laing's top-tier XOP series.

Aroma has subtle hints of sherry, vanilla and smoke. This is a dark, smooth and oily whisky - I noticed flavours of dark chocolate, tar, peat and salt. The real character comes through in the aftertaste - lingering peat and salt. Unmistakably Islay, and superb!
Bunnahabhain is my favourite range of unpeated whisky, there are many choices. My initial taste was a little disappointing but the high strength 8 year old whisky gave another choice. I would buy again on reflection.
