A superb old single cask Auchentoshan, distilled in May 1997 and bottled by Douglas Laing in March 2023 for their prestigious Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range.

This 25-year-old Auchentoshan was matured in a single refill hogshead, cask DL17251, which yielded just 193 hand-filled bottles at a natural cask strength of 53.3%. As with other XOP releases, the whisky was bottled without colouring or chill filtration.

Auchentoshan is unusual among Scottish malt distilleries for its traditional use of triple distillation, producing a particularly light and refined Lowland spirit. After a quarter of a century in a refill hogshead, this should provide an excellent showcase for the distillery's delicate character with plenty of mature complexity.

Douglas Laing's tasting notes describe honey and cream fragrances with citrus, barley and spice, developing to sweetly caramelised fruit, honey and barley on the finish.

A particularly appealing example of mature Auchentoshan from the late 1990s, and this is Bottle No. 1 of only 193 bottles produced.
