A superb vintage Ardbeg 1974 bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for their iconic Connoisseurs Choice range. Distilled during one of the distillery's most celebrated eras and bottled in 1995 after around 21 years of maturation, this is a wonderful example of old-school Ardbeg from a time long before the distillery's revival in the late 1990s.

The 1970s remain one of the most revered periods in Ardbeg's history, producing whiskies of remarkable elegance, complexity and balance. Rather than the intensely smoky style associated with modern Ardbeg, these older vintages are renowned for their beautifully integrated peat, displaying layers of mineral smoke, tropical fruits, citrus oils, medicinal herbs, sea salt, waxes and gentle earthy notes. The whisky's reduced bottling strength of 40% was typical of Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice releases of the period and allows the distillate's subtle complexity to shine through.

With Ardbeg spending much of the 1980s and 1990s operating only intermittently before its eventual rescue by Glenmorangie plc in 1997, vintages from the 1970s have become increasingly sought after. This 1974 Connoisseurs Choice remains a classic independent bottling from one of Islay's greatest distilleries and an excellent example of Gordon & MacPhail's long-standing relationship with Scotland's finest malt producers.
