Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 46%
A splendid old bottle of Ardbeg 10-year-old, which from the label can be dated to between 2002-2004, soon after the 10-year-old was reintroduced to the core range.
These old Ardbeg 10-year-olds from the early years of this century are top class drams, very different to the 10-year-old Ardbeg of today - this whisky would have been assembled from stocks laid down in the early 1990s before the Glenmorangie takeover, when Ardbeg was in semi-hibernation and was only operated for a few weeks each year by workers from Laphroaig, during a period when both distilleries were in the Allied Distillers stable.
The early Ardbeg 10s tend to be less sweet and have a broader flavour profile than the modern versions, with a really pure sootiness and an ashy, citrus, coastal, iodine-y character. Fantastic stuff, and these early versions are getting rarer as time goes on.
