Invergordon

Invergordon Distillery is one of Scotland’s best-known grain whisky distilleries, located in the Highland town of Invergordon on the shores of the Cromarty Firth. Established in 1959, the distillery began production in 1961 and was built to supply grain whisky for the rapidly expanding Scotch blends market.

Unlike malt distilleries, Invergordon uses continuous column stills and produces whisky primarily from cereals such as wheat or maize, together with a proportion of malted barley. Its large-scale production has made Invergordon an important component in numerous blended Scotch whiskies over the decades.

The distillery was acquired by Whyte & Mackay in the early 1990s and remains an important part of the company's whisky operations. Although most Invergordon is destined for blending, well-aged single grain bottlings are frequently released by independent bottlers, with examples matured for 20, 30, 40 years or more offering an interesting alternative to single malt Scotch whisky.
