Construction of the Lagg distillery began in the south of Arran island in 2017, with the first spirit running off the stills of the new distillery in March 2019. Lagg was built to supply peated malt whisky for owners Isle of Arran Distillers, who also own sister distillery Lochranza (formerly known as Arran distillery).
Founded: 2019
Stills: 1 Wash 1 Spirit
Capacity: 750,000 Litres
Owners: Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd
Arran/Lochranza distillery began producing peated malt whisky in 2004, but was never able to fully capitalise on its popularity because it made up only a small percentage of its annual production. The construction of Lagg distillery gives owners Isle of Arran Distillers a much greater capacity for producing peated single malt whisky, and allows the rechristened Lochranza distillery to concentrate fully on its excellent unpeated single malt.
One of the most highly-anticipated launches in recent whisky history, the first batch of Lagg’s Inaugural single malt whisky was released in autumn 2022. Lagg’s Inaugural Release is split into three batches of 10,000 bottles, with Batch 1 being 100% ex-bourbon casks, Batch 2 finished in specially-made Oloroso sherry firkin casks and Batch 3 finished in Rioja red wine casks.
Lagg’s standard single malt is made with heavily-peated barley at 50ppm, and there are rumours of a more heavily-peated spirit being made for future releases.
