This is one of the two 10 year old Whistle Pig single barrels specially selected by Wayne, Harrison and Tim and bottled exclusively for Whisky-Online.

We have selected these two casks to highlight the many variances in flavour you can find from barrel to barrel. Cask 102130 is the more elegant, herbaceous rye, with a lovely interplay of peppery spice and balancing sweetness.

Available only at Whisky-Online, Barrel #102130 was aged for 10 years in Warehouse 2, Rick C, Level 3 at the WhistlePig farm before being hand-bottled at 52.5% (105 US Proof).

Nose: Nicely balanced with dried herbs, fresh fennel and subtle wood glue; develops a vanilla creaminess alongside varnished wood aromas, dried bark and furniture polish. 

Palate: Sweet initially, with brown sugar and golden syrup, then turns a little menthol with eucalyptus hints, then clove, fennel, cardamom, and black pepper.

Finish: Good length, warm but not hot. The peppery spice and dried herbs persist longest.

Comments: Plenty of flavour, very herbaceous but good balance and impressive complexity.

This is the second of our two Whistle Pig barrel picks specially selected by Wayne, Harrison and Tim and bottled exclusively for Whisky-Online.

Each of these barrels have their own individual qualities that make them stand out. Both casks were bursting with flavour but Barrel #102222 is noticeably different to Barrel #102130, with this one being the more robust and earthy of the two picks.

Available only at Whisky-Online, Barrel #102222 was aged for 10 years in Warehouse 2, Rick E, Level 2 at the WhistlePig farm before being hand-bottled at 53.1% (106.2 US Proof).

Nose: A fruit-forward nose with raisins, currants, dried plums and blackberries. The woody aromas follow: varnish, glue, fresh cardamom and vanilla pods. Develops moss and bark aromas with time in the glass.

Palate: Sweet and earthy off the bat, then becomes very leafy - more herbaceous than the nose suggested. The dried fruits from the nose are there, with pine resin, playdoh and furniture polish notes.

Finish: Long, warming and peppery with a faint herby menthol tingle at the end.

Comments: More robust than the sister cask, this is perhaps less subtle but bursting with character and flavour.

Willett's Pot Still Reserve is a small batch Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 47% by Willett Distillery, formerly known as Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KBD), in an eye-catching still-shaped bottle.

The Willett Distillery was revived in 2012 after a near-thirty year absence, during which time KBD had established themselves as one of the USA's largest independent bourbon bottlers, with a large number of their brands using sourced bourbon from the neighbouring Heaven Hill distillery.

Nose: Vanilla lemon cake.
Palate: The palate is a balance of caramel, vanilla, spices and citrus. I'm not sure if they made the opulent bottle to match the Whiskey or vice versa.

Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 45.7% / 91.4 Proof

Michter's US*1 Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, as the name suggests, is bottled in relatively tiny quantities compared to the big names in American whiskey, with each Small Batch bottling containing no more than 20 barrels of bourbon in the assemblage.

Bottled at a hearty 45.7% (91.4 US Proof), Michter's US*1 Small Batch is a dry, earthy, spicy, grassy bourbon well suited to casual sipping or high end cocktails.

Michter's original distillery was closed in 1990 but the brand was revived by Chatham Imports around the turn of the millennium using sourced whiskeys. Chatham built two new distilleries for Michter's in Kentucky in 2015 and 2019, so it's very likely that their own bourbon is included in these bottlings now.

Only a distillery as determinedly individual as Maker's Mark (whose standard bourbon weighs in at 45%) would market a product called Maker's Mark 46 at 47%, but that's just how they roll!

The 46, you see, refers not to the strength but to the stave profile, which was the 46th recipe tried during product development. Maker's 46 is aged for longer than standard Maker's bourbon as the casks used had an extra ten staves of toasted French oak inserted for nine weeks at the end of maturation, adding extra vanilla flavour and oak spice.

As you'd expect for the company's first proper new product since the original appeared in 1953, this is splendid stuff.

Bottled by: Willett Distillery 70cl / 50.5% / 100.1 Proof

Owned by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers Co and bottled at their famous Willet Distillery in Bardstown Kentucky Rowan's Creek small batch bourbon was aged in charred oak barrels and hand bottled at 50.5% abv / 100.1 proof.

A beautiful sipping bourbon.

Nose: Bringing your nose to the glass and your olfactory is treated to caramel and vanilla layered on herbal and floral notes. 
Palate: The mouthfeel starts oily but finishes dry. You are then treated to sweet caramel, vanilla, dusted in floral notes.
Finish: Notes of oak and lingering spiciness.

Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey

A bottling of Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye, which was bottled in 2021 at 84.8 US Proof, equivalent to 42.4%.

Michter's is an historic American whiskey brand, created in 1950 and long associated with the Shenk / Bomberger distillery in Pennsylvania, which was founded in 1753 but closed in 1990. The Michter's brand was revived a decade later by Chatham Imports, who now operate two new Michter's distilleries in Kentucky.

Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye is a delicious sipping rye whiskey made using sheared rye grains and packed with dry, menthol-tinged, spicy rye flavours. A great rye for slow sipping, Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Rye also lends itself very well to classic Manhattan or Sazerac cocktails.

A modern classic bourbon, Woodford Reserve first appeared in the UK in the late 1990s and has developed a loyal following among bourbon drinkers and in cocktail bars ever since.

Woodford Reserve is a characterful high rye bourbon bottled in small batches at 43.2%. Woodford Reserve is a great slow-sipper but is well-suited to various cocktails.
