Wolfburn Distillery

The original Wolfburn distillery was located in Thurso, on the Caithness coast at the top of the Highlands of Scotland, but closed in 1852 after a brief and chequered history. In 2012, a new Wolfburn distillery was constructed by Aurora Brewing Ltd a short distance from the original Wolfburn site.

Aurora’s new Wolfburn distillery is equipped with a steel and copper mash tun, four stainless steel washbacks and a pair of small copper pot stills, giving a production capacity of around 125 000 litres per annum. Wolfburn uses long fermentations to produce a lively, fruity, biscuity malt, and devotes around 10% of its annual capacity to the production of peated whisky.

Wolfburn began distillation 2013, with the inaugural Wolfburn 3-year-old Highland single malt whisky appearing in March 2016. The distillery now bottles a wide range of single cask and small batch whiskies, and introduced a flagship Wolfburn 12-year-old Highland malt in 2025, the same year that the first independent bottlings of Wolfburn’s whisky appeared as mystery malts from Dornoch’s Thompson Brothers and The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
