Andrew Torrance has spent over 25 years in the whisky industry, starting at Morrison Bowmore in the mid-1990s with many years specialising in Travel Retail for Beam Suntory and William Grants. Later, Andrew had stints as Managing Director of The Whisky Shop and Copper Dog Whisky before setting up Pendulum Spirits with a group of former colleagues in 2020 and creating the marvellous Fable Whisky range.

So, as a whisky novice, I took great delight at the prospect of the tasting experience hosted by Whisky Online. The tasting set arrived through the post and a Zoom call enabled Andrew Torrance from Fable to tell us about his background in the industry, the Fable range and the unique branding associated with the range. The drams were excellent, with no suggestion in the flavour profile of the 50+% alcoholic content, I expected a degree of alcohol sharpness or burn, but there was none. Water was only required in single drop quantities to open the drams up. The Zoom meeting allowed participants to ask questions and raise comments and we had a great conversation about Islay amongst other topics. I also found out about whisky 'legs', which were explained to me a few days later.
If you are new to fine whisky, and want to learn about the subject, in a relaxed, informal setting, events like these are fantastic. If you want to taste something new and feel that committing the cost of a whole bottle is a potential risk, then for £25 you get an excellent value for money opportunity with several drams to try. The final positive point was a purchase price reduction on any bottle that was included in the tasting, an opportunity that I put to good use.
