The 2022 release of the lovely Classic Malts Distillers Edition Oban, which is traditionally finished in Montilla Fino sherry casks before release.

The Oban Distillers Edition has been in the Classic Malts DE lineup since the first releases in the late 1990s and has always been popular, if a little underrated, perhaps because it's finished in Fino sherry rather than the more popular Oloroso or Pedro Ximenez styles. Nonetheless, this is a lovely dram from a distillery whose small size and importance to Diageo's blends preclude a broad range of official releases.

Appearance: Clear amber. Fine beading. Long thin legs.

Body: Medium.

Nose: Opens very fine, clean and sweet with hints of salty sea breeze and a light, grapey note from the dry Fino, then grows more pungent with time, to hint of smoke and spice.

Palate: Creamy smooth and sweet and gently grapey to start; then waves of malty flavour develop, all held together by a real backbone of sea salt and gentle white-pepper spiciness. Delicious and easy to drink.

Finish: Long, attractively sweet-smoky and clean, with appetising oak-spice. Drying, with an attractive, lightly peppery aftertaste.
