Single Cask Guyana Rum
Bottled By: Berry Bros & Rudd 70cl / 60.5%

Part of a fascinating 'vice-versa' pair of bottlings in Berry Bros & Rudd's summer outturn, this 2010 vintage rum from the Diamond distillery in Guyana spent the final year of its maturation reracked into a cask that had previously held potently smoky young Islay whisky. The whisky, meanwhile, was finished in the rum cask.

The result is rather different from your standard 10-year-old Guyanese rum, with Diamond's luscious texture and exotic fruit flavours still intact but enhanced by the whiff of sooty ash and salinity from the peated whisky.

Bottled at a mighty 60.5% this Diamond 10-year-old Islay-finished single cask rum will reward the bold - and it's great to see a company as steeped in tradition as BBR coming out with interesting experiments like this.

Tasting Notes

This Guyana rum was re-racked into an ex-Williamson Islay whisky barrel for 12 months.

Nose: The nose is an unusual pairing of the high ester tropical fruits that Guyanan rum often displays, with a slight ashy note drifting in, as if carried on a sea breeze.

Palate: The palate is complex giving tobacco leaf, some engine oil and plenty of overripe fruit, leading to more of the same delicate smoke on the finish.

A very unusual rum; if you have the opportunity and stamina, it is best paired with the Williamson.

Doug McIvor Says

“Diamond distillery, found on the banks of the Demerara river, is renowned for its ability to produce numerous styles of rum. We have taken diversity in rum flavour a step further with this edition by finishing it into a freshly emptied Williamson Islay cask for a year. This is unique and rich, a full on rum not to be missed by the adventurous.”
