Gordon & MacPhail don't go to the trouble of putting out a Private Collection bottling unless the liquid is pretty special, so this is very exciting indeed - a 40-year-old Tormore from the 1980 vintage!
The Private Collection is specifically dedicated to 'celebrated, little-known or closed distilleries'. Comfortably the oldest Tormore ever bottled, this 40-year-old Tormore came from a refill bourbon barrel of the 1980 vintage that yielded just 96 bottles on outturn in 2020 at a remarkable 58.2%.
Tormore is neither celebrated nor closed but it is little-known. It seems likely that this bottling could prove to be a great leap forward in the process of changing that.
