A superb old Bowmore distilled in July 1997 and bottled by Douglas Laing in August 2022 for their prestigious Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range.

Matured for 25 years in a refill hogshead, cask DL16154 yielded just 219 individually hand-filled bottles at a natural cask strength of 47.5%. This particular example is Bottle No. 001, making it the very first numbered bottle from the cask. As with other XOP releases, the whisky was bottled without colouring or chill-filtration.

Bowmore from the 1990s has become increasingly sought after, particularly well-aged examples from independent bottlers. The distillery's combination of coastal Islay peat and a notably fruity spirit character can work particularly well with longer maturation, and single casks from this period offer an increasingly rare opportunity to explore mature Bowmore outside the distillery's own bottlings.

Douglas Laing's tasting notes describe a nose of sea salt and gentle peat smoke, with a rich and warming palate balanced by kiln-dried barley, lemon zest and candy sweets. The finish shows more Islay character with puffs of bonfire smoke, cured meat and sweet barley.
