Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky Bottled by: Douglas Laing 70cl / 43.1%
A very old single grain whisky from Edinburgh’s North British distillery, distilled in July 1988 and matured for 35 years before being bottled by Douglas Laing in September 2023 for the prestigious Xtra Old Particular Black series.
North British has been producing grain whisky in Edinburgh since 1887 and remains one of Scotland’s largest grain distilleries. Its spirit is produced predominantly from maize using continuous column stills and is an important component in many blended Scotch whiskies. Long maturation can transform this relatively light new make into wonderfully rich, sweet whisky, with mature examples often showing abundant vanilla, caramel, coconut and polished oak character.
This 1988 North British spent its full 35 years in a refill barrel and was bottled at a natural cask strength of 43.1%, without colouring or chill-filtration. Single cask DL18162 yielded just 167 bottles.
Douglas Laing's tasting notes: Opens dulcet with caramel, oak and spices. Palate is oily with nuts and bourbon hues, followed by muscovado and sweet maple syrup.
Please Note: This bottle is a part of a large batch of bin-ends we recently picked up at a great price, enabling us to pass on savings to our customers. However, only one or two bottles of each product were included in the parcel - so when they’re gone they’re gone! Please note that due to the size and nature of this batch of stock, some labels and boxes may show signs of wear.

Aroma has subtle hints of sherry, vanilla and smoke. This is a dark, smooth and oily whisky - I noticed flavours of dark chocolate, tar, peat and salt. The real character comes through in the aftertaste - lingering peat and salt. Unmistakably Islay, and superb!
Bunnahabhain is my favourite range of unpeated whisky, there are many choices. My initial taste was a little disappointing but the high strength 8 year old whisky gave another choice. I would buy again on reflection.
