Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky Bottled by: Douglas Laing 70cl / 45.5%
A superb old Strathclyde single grain whisky, distilled in September 1987 and bottled by Douglas Laing in May 2023 for their prestigious Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range.
This 35-year-old Strathclyde was matured in a single refill barrel, Cask DL17297, which yielded just 190 hand-filled bottles at a natural cask strength of 45.5%. This is Bottle No. 1 of the release. As with other XOP bottlings, it was released without added colouring or chill filtration.
Strathclyde is a large grain distillery in Glasgow, established in 1927 and now owned by Chivas Brothers. Its spirit is produced primarily for the company's blended Scotch whiskies, meaning long-aged single cask releases such as this are relatively uncommon.
Douglas Laing's tasting notes describe sweet cherry and sherbet on the nose, followed by barley sugar hard candy, syrup and honey on the palate, with a long finish of vanilla and sugar-sprinkled buttered brown toast.
Please Note: This bottle is a part of a large batch of bin-ends we recently picked up at a great price, enabling us to pass on savings to our customers. However, only one or two bottles of each product were included in the parcel - so when they’re gone they’re gone! Please note that due to the size and nature of this batch of stock, some labels and boxes may show signs of wear.

Aroma has subtle hints of sherry, vanilla and smoke. This is a dark, smooth and oily whisky - I noticed flavours of dark chocolate, tar, peat and salt. The real character comes through in the aftertaste - lingering peat and salt. Unmistakably Islay, and superb!
Bunnahabhain is my favourite range of unpeated whisky, there are many choices. My initial taste was a little disappointing but the high strength 8 year old whisky gave another choice. I would buy again on reflection.
