Big Peat Islay blended malt whisky was introduced by indie bottler Douglas Laing around 2009 as a blended malt consisting of only Islay single malt whiskies. The first batches of Big Peat became one of the surprise hits of the year.
One of the most significant of the new wave of blended malt whiskies, Big Peat is a blend of single malt whiskies from some of the most popular distilleries on Islay, including Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and even a sprinkle of Port Ellen. The success of Big Peat led to Douglas Laing introducing further regional blended malt whiskies including The Scallywag, Rock Island and Timorous Beastie.
