Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Gordon & MacPhail 70cl / 57.9%
Sometimes it's tempting to wonder if Gordon & MacPhail have got a secret that the rest of the whisky industry haven't cottoned onto yet. Have they found a way of denying the angels their fair share? How can a 32-year-old refill American hogshead contain whisky at 57.9%?
When the whisky is Glenrothes, though, the answer is sadly more prosaic - at Glenrothes, new spirit is filled to cask at a much higher strength than the industry standard, averaging somewhere near 69% (nice) rather than the general 63.5% adhered to by most Scottish distilleries.
Even so, 57.9% is still a very high strength for a whisky of this antiquity, and ensures that this 1988 Glenrothes 32-year-old Connoisseurs Choice Cask Strength will have retained a pretty massive flavour concentration. This will be superb stuff.
