Island Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled By: Mossburn Distillers 70cl / 46%
Introduced in late 2021, Caisteal Chamuis is a heavily-peated blended Island malt whisky from Mossburn Distillers, owners of Torabhaig distillery on Skye - the rather French-looking name is actually Gaelic for Castle Camus, a ruined fortress on Skye's Sleat peninsula.
This is the 12-year-old edition of Caisteal Chamuis' blended malt (there's also a NAS version) and has undergone an interesting maturation: after 12 years in refill American hogsheads the blend was switched to Oloroso sherry-seasoned American oak casks before a further finishing period in a solera made of recoopered European oak sherry butts.
Caisteal Chamuis' guiding principle is encapsulated in the tagline 'Heavily-Peated, Heavily Smooth', which sounds like just the thing for the cold winter evenings.
