Single malt whisky fans of a certain age may remember the original 1990s bottling of Benriach 10-year-old - a sad, lacklustre little whisky emblematic of then-owners Seagram's negligent mismanagement of a fine distillery.

Thankfully, Benriach's revival under Billy Walker post-2004 has been continued by present-day owners Brown Forman and the distillery is now stewarded by some of the safest hands and smartest noses in the business.

All this means that the current relaunch of Benriach 10-year-old, which has reclaimed the original colour scheme and utilitarian label style from the old 1990s bottling, is a truly heartwarming event.

Nowadays Benriach 10-year-old is a very different animal. The current iteration has been expertly crafted by Master Blender Rachel Barrie from bourbon, sherry and virgin oak casks to highlight the distillery's fruit-forward sparkle - in other words, this is the real Benriach, and it's worlds away from the dull disappointment of the past.

"It's the classic, sweet, fruit-laden style of Benriach. Luscious orchard fruit on a base of beautiful vanilla cream and pastry, that for me is The Original Ten."
