Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 40.6%
Macallan 1876 Replica was bottled in 2003 and was part of a series of Replica releases by Macallan to recreate the style of whisky from the nineteenth century. These replicas were copied from old bottles of Macallan the distillery had purchased in the 1980s and 1990s, with small samples of the liquid inside retrieved and recreated by Macallan's master blender Bob Dalgarno.
Unfortunately, after questions were raised by Dave Broom and other whisky writers it was discovered that the bottles that the Replica series recreated were in fact clever Italian fakes. The series was soon discontinued, with the 1876 being one of the last Macallan Replicas to be bottled.
However, although the entire affair was rather embarrassing for Macallan, the recreated whiskies themselves were interesting drams showing a different side to Macallan than the traditional full sherried expressions. The late, great Michael Jackson scored this 1876 replica at 94 points and the bottles' charming aesthetics along with the quality of the contents have ensured that these Macallan Replica bottlings have now become popular with collectors.
