Originally introduced in spring 2024, The Midgie has quickly become one of Ardnamurchan Distillery's most eagerly anticipated annual limited editions. Named after the infamous Highland midge, this playful small-batch release showcases a fruit-forward side of the distillery's distinctive house style while retaining the subtle maritime peat influence that has made Ardnamurchan so highly regarded.

The 2026 edition builds on the success of the inaugural release with a more complex cask recipe. Bottled at 48% ABV without chill filtration or added colouring, it combines both unpeated and peated spirit matured in a carefully balanced mix of tawny and ruby port casks, alongside unpeated bourbon barrels. The tawny port casks in particular bring an earthy, saline complexity, while the bourbon casks provide vibrant orchard fruit to complement the rich berry sweetness of the port influence.

Expect aromas of fresh raspberries, ripe plums and red berries, followed by notes of white pepper, soft orchard fruits, gentle coastal salinity and a delicate thread of peat smoke. The finish is fruity, slightly earthy and satisfyingly smoky, striking the balance between sweetness and maritime character that defines The Midgie.

Produced in a limited run of fewer than 9,000 bottles for worldwide distribution, the 2026 Midgie is another excellent example of Ardnamurchan's innovative approach to cask selection and small-batch whisky making.
