Description

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 750ml / 43%

A marvellous old bottle of Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve Highland single malt whisky. This is a 750ml bottle produced for the US market so the normal 75/70cl dating doesn't apply, but this wooden box presentation was standard throughout the 1990s and the distillery manager's signature belongs to Mike Nicholson, who was in charge at Lochnagar from 1998-2003.

Nowadays, in this ludicrous era where prestige single malts can often come with five or six-figure price-tags, it's easy to forget that for a long time after Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve was first introduced it was one of only two whiskies in Diageo forerunners United Distillers' portfolio to cost more than £100 (the other being JW Blue).

Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve remained as the rarest and most expensive Diageo whisky on the market even after the advent of the first Special Releases in 2001, when it was considerably pricier than the likes of Port Ellen 1st Release and Talisker 1975.  Remarkably, at the time of its discontinuation in 2018, Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve's retail price was the same or cheaper than it had been in the 1990s, which must be almost unique. A terrific old school Highland dram showing Lochnagar's elegant spirit enhanced by subtle sherry casks in the assemblage.
