Due to the requisitioning of coal for the war effort, almost all whisky produced in Scotland between 1940 and 1947 was heavily peated. This is most notable in the Speysiders that were operational at the time.
After long ageing in such phenomenal sherry casks, this manifests itself as the most glorious kind of oily, fruit-laden phenols with notes of metal polish, wet earth, pipe tobacco and ancient, simmeringly complex peat. once in a lifetime stuff.
By the middle of World War 2 grain, manpower and munitions were at an all-time low in Scotland and as a result, barely any whisky was being produced.
Glenlivet was one of only a handful of distilleries to produce during 1942 and 1943.
This is not only a stunning whisky in its own right but a genuine historical artefact.

Complex with subtle dried citrus, raisins as I would usually like in a sherry cask but something (the smoke, grape skins ? from the sherry cask?) unwelcome reminds me of grappa.
