Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers is run by a branch of one of the most famous families in the whisky industry. The Morrisons were already established whisky brokers before buying the Bowmore distillery in 1963, and added the Glen Garioch and Auchentoshan distilleries to their stable before selling the business to Suntory in 1994. Former Bowmore chairman Brian Morrison and his son Jamie subsequently set up as indie bottlers with some of the old Bowmore directors, launching the Càrn Mòr label in 2007. 

In 2013, the Morrisons bought the extinct Old Perth blended whisky brand and relaunched it as a range of blended malts. In 2017, Brian Morrison and Jamie Morrison founded their Lowland distillery Aberargie, whose first single malt whiskies are expected in 2026. The company rebranded as Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers in 2020, relaunching the Càrn Mòr range in upgraded packaging.
