Glenury Royal is another of these lamented closed distilleries that did not survive Diageo’s purges in the 1980s. Many of these closed distilleries were much more eccentric in nature (for example, Glen Albyn and Glen Mhor), a fact which probably contributed to the decisions to close them.

Glenury was one of the more consistent of those distillates. The distillery's whisky was old school in nature but still occasionally a difficult spirit, and it has many fans that mourn its loss. After a flurry of excellent bottlings of Glenury Royal around the turn of the century the well of remaining casks now seems to have run dry - at the time of writing in 2025 barely a dozen bottlings of Glenury have appeared since 2010, and prices for this superb Highland single malt now reflect this sad reality.
