Flora & Fauna

The Flora & Fauna series was a way to create a range of bottlings to showcase some of the many distilleries which were owned by Scottish Malt Distillers at the time (now Diageo). The series was first introduced in the early 1990s and over time more and more distilleries were included in the range. The livery was based upon the Aberfeldy 15 year old official bottling which was first released back in the late 1980s. Early editions in the series were notable for their white capsules. These were quickly replaced with black foil capsules as the series grew. Early bottlings also came in branded wooden boxes as well which were, in time, replaced with cheaper cardboard versions. All in all there have been 26 distilleries in the Flora & Fauna collection over the years and the series has now become highly collectable. Some distilleries are much harder to obtain than others as Diageo sold certain distilleries and thus discontinued their presence in the range. Examples of the rarer distilleries are Royal Brackla and Aberfeldy, with Speyburn being the ultimate jewel in the collection. In 1997 a cask strength variation of the series was launched as an alternative to the usual 43% bottling strength of the regular Flora & Fauna editions. The cask strength set consisted of one-off bottlings from 9 distilleries all with vintage statements. These are seen as part of the set as well and completists will endeavor to add this sub-set to their collection. There is arguably a final bottling for Flora & Fauna collectors which is the Craigellachie Centenary edition. This is an extremely rare variant bottling of which only 24 were produced with a rear label celebrating the centenary of the distillery. Good luck finding one of those though.
