Distilled in February 1976 and aged for 14 years, this single malt was bottled at its natural cask strength of 57.2%, in the Society's original cream and green livery.

Pittyvaich was established in 1974 by Arthur Bell & Sons, adjacent to the company's Dufftown distillery in Speyside. Built primarily to supply malt whisky for Bell's blended Scotch, Pittyvaich had an unusually short working life, closing in 1993 after less than two decades of production. The distillery was subsequently demolished in 2002, making it one of Scotland's shortest-lived modern malt whisky distilleries.

This particular bottling was featured in the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's New Year Bottlings, Issue No. 31 (1991), where it was described as one of the stars of the release. The Society noted that Pittyvaich had never previously been bottled as a single malt and praised the quality of the whisky despite the distillery's relatively recent establishment.

The original tasting notes describe a pale whisky with a particularly sweet nose, suggesting maturation in a good bourbon cask. Aromas of butterscotch, raisins, crème brûlée and haystack are highlighted, with the palate said to deliver everything promised by the nose.

As the Society's inaugural Pittyvaich release, cask 90.1 holds considerable historical interest. Featured in the Society's New Year Bottlings, Issue No. 31 (1991), where it was offered to members for just £33, the whisky was described as one of the stars of the release. Distilled during the distillery's earliest years, this is a particularly interesting example of Pittyvaich single malt, accompanied by contemporary tasting notes and its original release price.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0442/9293/1743/files/925679Pittyvaich1976-199014YearOldSMWS90.1.jpg?v=1793199774
