This Port Ellen was distilled in 1982 and aged for 35 years in refill sherry butt #2040 before being bottled in 2018 with a yield of 567 bottles. This bottling is a true masterpiece - the palette of flavours and aromas is elegant and delicate, yet rich and complex.
The bottle is presented in a black lacker box with 2 Signatory Vintage branded Glencairn glasses.
Port Ellen was founded in 1825 and belonged tot he Ramsay family until 1920. After closing in 1930, it was brought back to life in 1967 and the number of stills increased from two to four before being dismantled in 1983. More than any other distillery Port Ellen stands out above all others as a lost and lamented spirit. Of all the distilleries that were sadly closed in the 80s it is Port Ellen that has come to be mourned the most. This is undoubtedly helped by the fact that it is a peated malt from Islay, a fact that already lends it cult status, but also because there have been literally hundreds of bottlings of it over the years and the number does not seem to be dwindling even now. A malt of great individuality and often of very high quality it is a whisky that will only increase in desirability as time passes and stocks inevitably dwindle.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep golden yellow.
Nose: Rich and immensely beautiful, smoky, tarry and herbaceous. Allowed to breathe it becomes increasingly complex. Palate: Peaty, and fruity with lots o lemon, pear and bramble before gradually revealing a lucious side of sage. This has a long finish full of vanilla, saline and peat with a delicate mouthfeel.
