Port Ellen 1979-2019 | 40 Year Old | Gordon & MacPhail Private Collection
Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Gordon & MacPhail 70cl / 54.7%
We don't think anything is more befitting for a G & M Private Collection bottling than this 40-Year-Old single cask Port Ellen. There have only been a handful of 40-year-old bottlings released from this closed distillery, and with Gordon & MacPhail's cask management, this will be a sure-fire winner.
With just 407 bottles worldwide and 66 allocated for the UK, demand will certainly outstrip supply...
This superlative Port Ellen from Gordon & MacPhail was distilled on the 11th December 1979 and matured in a refill sherry puncheon #7236 before being bottled over 40 years later in 2019 with a yield of just 407 bottles.
Each bottle is presented in a high-quality wooden box.
The Private Collection is what Gordon & MacPhail is all about - Casks are personally selected by members of the Urquhart family and these are from whiskies of a great age from Scottish distilleries that are much celebrated, little known or closed. The whiskies are only selected for bottling when they are ready to be done so and timing is everything.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich aromas of sun-ripened red apple with delicate sweet spice. Notes of strawberry liquorice with tangy citrus elements give way to subtle smoked kipper notes.
Palate: Intense; mouth-watering crushed black pepper is followed by flavours of baked apple. Traces of fresh orange entwine with mature oak. A slight herbal edge develops.
Finish: Long and sweet with whisps of peat smoke.
