Founded by James Findlater in 1823 on the site of an illicit distillery, Mortlach was the first distillery to be licenced in Dufftown. Output was very small back then and spirit was generally sold straight off the still. It changed hands a few times until it was bought by the Grant Brothers (Glen Grant) in 1837 who then proceeded to gut the distillery for equipment to use in their distillery in Rothes. After another change in ownership, it was then purchased by John Walker & Sons in 1923 for use in their blended whiskies and in 2014 Diageo launches new bottlings under the Mortlach name.
