After starting out life as Elgin West Brewery in 1830 records show that the first spirit was distilled on September 13th 1897 and so the Glen Moray distillery was born. Robert Throne & Sons were the owners at the time and also owned Aberlour distillery which seemed to take priority over Glen Moray which then led to its closure in 1910. A decade or so later and Glen Moray was bought by the Macdonald & Muir families who later became Glenmorangie.
