Built in 1851 by William Mackenzie it was the first distillery to have a steep-sided pagoda. After Mackenzie's death in 1865, it was leased to banker James Fleming who ran it with Mackenzie's son and thus Mackenzie and Company were formed. In 1898 it merged with to form Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd. Soon after, in 1917 a fire destroys the distillery and pagoda and it is forced to close until it is reopened in 1920. Since then another fire damaged the distillery and modernisation and expansion has taken place and it is now owned by Diageo.
