Founded in 1885, the North British grain distillery in Edinburgh is one of the largest in the UK, knocking out well over a million litres of spirit a week. A fair chunk of that output is Smirnoff, of course, but we won't hold that against them.
The vast majority of the grain whisky made at North British goes to joint owners Diageo & Edrington's blended scotch whiskies: Famous Grouse, J&B, Johnnie Walker and the like. So it's a rare and welcome sight when a long-aged single Lowland grain whisky from North British arrives on our virtual shelves - and even more so when it's a sherry cask.
This particular example is a refill sherry cask dug up by the splendid folk at Signatory, who've bottled this 29-year-old North British 1991 in 2020 at its natural cask strength of 49.2%. It seems inconceivable that this will be anything other than excellent.
