Description

Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Berry Bros & Rudd 70cl / 49.9%

When aristo wine merchants Berry Bros & Rudd get their fancy packaging out, you know it must be something special. For the avoidance of doubt, they've even named this series Exceptional Casks.

This particular Exceptional Cask is a 1991 sherry butt (number 103023, for those interested) from the lost Lowland grain distillery Cambus, bottled as a 29-year-old in 2021 at its natural colour (of course) and its full cask strength of 49.9%.

Cambus distillery was closed in 1993 by owners UDV, known today as Diageo, so this is one of the last vintages of production at the distillery. 481 bottles were yielded from the cask, but we've only got a handful so don't hang around if you want one.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Butterscotch, desiccated coconut and Belgian waffles, with ginger and cheesecake emerging with time.

Palate: Follows with waves of fudge, cinnamon, cloves and chocolate showing remarkably good texture.

Finish: Pecan, sultanas and bruised banana all show through the lingering finish. A challenge to those who say all grain whiskies lack complexity.

Ronnie Cox Says:
“Climbing into this glass like Alice in Wonderland the surprises are so unexpected for an unassuming and usually modest character. Resounding with treacle fudge cloaking the ripe red apple, soft intriguing and beguiling it summons you to its liquid depths. A cracker.”
