Description

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers 70cl / 47.5%

A sherried 10-year-old Glentauchers 2011 bottled in 2022 by Morrison Distillers without colouring or chill filtration for their Carn Mor Strictly Limited range.

This 2011 Glentauchers 10-year-old came from a micro-batch of Pedro Ximenez sherry butts, with a generous 1641 bottles yielded at Carn Mor's preferred 47.5% strength. Glentauchers is another Pernod distillery you rarely hear much about, as the vast majority of its spirit gets tipped into a big vat labelled Ballantine's, but the tantalising natural chestnut colour of this whisky should draw plenty of admirers.

A phenomenal sherry bomb from Carn Mor!

Into Speyside I venture and find this remarkable PX-matured Glentauchers which has been mellowing inside ex-sherry butts for so long it's turned a deep chestnut red-brown colour, which I took as an early visual indication of a dram with something potentially incredible in its taste. This whisky is quite amazing, quite how so much flavour can be packed into a sip of liquid is beyond the laws of any science I was ever taught; in fact the manner in which Morrison have got the spirit to interact with the wood in this case is more akin to alchemy! The nose is full of brandy-loaded mince pie fruit, raisins, sultanas and currants, with some glace cherry and toffee. The taste is immediately warming and rich, with a sherry bomb-explosion occurring early in the finish which provided a remarkable taste experience, one which I found difficult to describe, in short a huge hit of sherried fruits that turns to a very long finish, with something like aniseed right at the end. Certainly worth trying if you fancy something new.
