Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Signatory Vintage 70cl / 43%
Another distillery rarely seen as an independent due to almost every last drop of its output being used for Diageo's blends. Benrinnes traditionally produced an oily, meaty single malt whisky through a convoluted kind of triple distillation, but this was changed to double distillation in 2007.
All of which makes this 2008 vintage Benrinnes, rescued from the blending vat by Signatory to be bottled as a single malt, a most intriguing proposition. This edition is from a pair of bourbon barrels vatted together and bottled as an 11 year old in 2020 at 43%.
It'll be interesting to see, as time goes on, how Benrinnes' character alters after the changes to the distillation regime. Most people who have tasted Benrinnes will only be familiar with the sherried Flora & Fauna bottling produced in the old style; these bottlings of post-2007 vintages that emerge will likely be rather different and will make an interesting comparison.
