Built in 1819 the history of Clynelish can take a bit of reading to fully understand. It wasn't a huge success in its early days and changed hands a few times until James Ainslie Heilbron took over in 1896 with John Risk who would go on to become the sole owner in 1912. Risk worked closely with Distillers Company Limited and the blender for John Walker and Sons and eventually both Clynelish and John Walker would sit under DCL. A new Clynelish distillery was built alongside the original one in 1968 and then in 1969 the original distillery was renamed Brora and due to drought on Islay at the time it produced heavily peated whisky to go into blends until 1973 and then finally closed in 1983. Both Clynelish and Brora have hit cult status with whisky fans over the years.
