Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Legend has it that the greatest Scottish warrior of all, Fionn mac Cumhail, also known as Fingal, was walking across Islay with his two massive hounds. Bran and Sceolang, Fionn, who was possessed of supernatural powers and superhuman strength, hoisted one of the standing stones at Ardbeg and threw it half way across the island into the depths of Loch Indaal for his dogs to fetch back, The Splash made by the stone stirred the dark sands at the bottom of the Loch, and with them stirred from his thousand year sleep the sleeping from the sea dragon Kranna Dubh. Kranna surged up from the depths and swam to the shore at Bowmore to meet with Fionn in combat. A fierce battle ensured, ending with Kranna lurching back into the Loch, mortally wounded by Fionns magical sword, Mac a' Luin, his dark blood seeping into the waters. To this day, the sea dragons image appears on the Bowmore label.

Less peat was used as coal became steadilly more available after the second world war. This is most notable in the speysiders that were operational at the time. After long ageing in such phenomenal sherry casks this manifests itself as the most glorious kind of oily, fruit laden phenols with notes of metal polish, wet earth, pipe tobacco and ancient, simmeringly complex peat. once in a lifetime stuff.

Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky Longrow was produced in 1973 and again in 1974 but then it was not produced again until 1987. This makes the two seventies vintages distinctly separate from the latter years in style. The 1973's were drier and oilier than the 74s but otherwise they both displayed the same incredibly intense coastal, metallic peat and farmyard notes with layers of fruit complexity and old school elements like wax, minerals, coal smoke, hessian and tar. These old bottligns of Longrow are some of the most brilliant and fascinating ever released.

Octomore has been a little controversial since it was first launched a few years ago. Mixed reviews and widely differing opinion all seem to focus on the 'politics' of this particular spirit. But if you taste it for what it is then all that fades away. This is a unique and excellently made whisky, one that seems to balance modern and old school stylistics surprisingly well. The peat is high yes but there are still some fantastic complexities to it and, even at the tender ages of three and four years, it is incredibly mature and drinkable. If you don't like peat then don't touch this one, but if you look for something unique, uncompromising and intense then this is bound to be a great drinking experience for you.

It is probably the best 'gateway' Islay malt on the market. While not as potent as the southern Islay trilogy, it balances its peaty power with a vigorous coastal freshness and medicinal complexity that makes it unique amongst all whiskies.
