Draw an imaginary line on the map between Dundee and Greenock in Scotland, and the area to the south of the line is the Lowland region. Once a hive of whisky production, the Lowland region now has just 3 distilleries in operation: Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan and Bladnoch.
Other lowland single malts are still available, although no longer produced: Inverleven, Kinclaith, Ladyburn, Littlemill, Rosebank and St. Magdalene.
Lowland malts tend to be lighter than whiskies from other regions and tend to have little or no peating. Lowland whisky is often used as an aperitif due to its dry finish.
A nice example of Auchentoshan from the 1980s. The house style at this time was similarly light but with some interesting oily attributes and more green, herbaceous qualities. A must try for Auchentoshan fans keen to brush up on their history. More Details
These old bottlings of Auchentoshan were much more leafy and green than current bottlings. Often showing some more old style aromas and notes of wax and minerality. Well worth it if you'd like a snapshot into a bygone era of lowland distilling. More Details
Another of these old Auchentoshans. This 18yo is more sherry driven and as a result is a richer more majestic take on the Auchentoshan style. Not to mention a decade or two of glass mellowing to boot. A great dram. More Details
Distilled 1975, aged for 35 years in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at a naturally low strength of 46.9%. This is a heaven sent recipe for the perfect Auchentoshan. This is beautifully packaged and looks to be a stunning dram to boot. More Details
A 1998 limited batch, cask strength Auchentoshan matured in European fino sherry casks. This one has sort of flown under the radar a bit so grab it while you can. More Details
This new Auchentoshan has spent a full 11 years maturing in ex Bordeaux French Oak casks. As usual with these more 'exotic' wood experiments the fact that it has been matured rather than finished is very promising. It means the quality of the French Oak is what does the talking rather than just the wine residues. This should be a sweet and fruity belter. More Details
This modern classic is a bit of a hotchpotch of different oak influences but it really seems to work and has many fans. Rich chocolate, mocha, espresso, jam, spice and little flecks of treacle. Cigar friendly too. More Details
Auchentoshan seem to have suddenly sneezed a bunch of fascinating new releases onto the market. This is perhaps the most intriguing, released initially as a distillery only bottling, the label states that it was designed to be a natural, full strength version of the Auchentoshan Classic. I suspect it is much better than that sounds. Young Auchentoshan at full strength is often fantastically light, refreshing and elegant spirit. More Details
A rare 10 year old from the Bladnoch distillery, bottled under the Flora and Fauna series, wooden boxed version is becoming increasingly rare and highly collectable. More Details
Bladnoch always seems to show best at 15-20 years and this cask also comes from a very transitional era in the distillery's life when it was moving from a more old style highlandesque malt into the Bladnoch we know and love today. This should be fascinating and fantastic stuff. More Details
These old 8yo Bladnochs are very different from more recent bottlings. They come tend to come across like the bastard child of an old school highland malt and a younger lowlander. The classic citrus and butter is all there but there is also loads of wax, minerals and flinty notes. Very beautiful, old school and fascinating whisky. More Details
One of the few remaining distilleries in Lowlands, its stills are among the largest in Scotland.
A rural location amid fields of barley just twenty miles from the capita makes this “The Edinburgh Malt” More Details
Glenkinchie's aromatic smoothness brings to mind cut flowers and creamy lemon cheesecake. Crisp and focused, with a herbal, drying finish, this is an ideal aperitif and partner to smoked fish, sushi or scallops. More Details
This is from last year's special releases and, like many of Diageo's 'lighter' malts, shows that Glenkinchie is a different animal entirely when not diluted down to 40%. This is a wonderful example of the make, elegant, spicy, complex and delicious. Well worth trying if you want to see a more genuine side to Glenkinchie. More Details
This is one of the oldest expressions in the Manager's Choice range and just as well because Glenkinchie really shines with a little more age and strength behind it. This MC bottling is no exception. More Details
Limited edition 20 year old Littlemill, specially bottled in celebration of the Marriage His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton. More Details
