Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

In geographic terms the Highland region of Scotland is the largest Scotch whisky producing region and offers the widest range of variations in style.

West Highland whisky tends to be less peaty than Islay whisky and some people say a common characteristic of Highland malts is that they have a sweet start and a dry finish.

North Highland single malts tend to be light bodied, spicy and sometimes salty.

Single malts from the Eastern, Southern and Central Highlands are often fruity, sweet, light bodied and with a dry finish.

Highland single malts include Glenmorangie, Dalwhinnie, Oban and Brora.

Glen Garioch 1966

REF: 5210

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 43%

The oldest in a series of three different vintages of Glen Garioch bottled for Oddbins in the late 90s. At the time of distillation Glen Garioch was making some of the most beautifully peated spirit in the world. This should be phenomenal.

Glen Garioch 1967

REF: 5211

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 43%

The second vintage for Oddbins. This one is from 1967 and should be just as immense as the 1966. More old style, farmy, peaty perfection than you can shake a worm tub at.

Glen Garioch 1971

REF: 5212

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 43%

Of the three vintages for Oddbins in the 1990s this is easily the most notorious (no little thanks to a score of 95/100 from Serge Valentin of whiskyfun). Almost all the Glen Gariochs that have appeared from the early 1970s have been absolutely stunning. This is easily in the top two.

Brora 1977 | 21 Year | Rare Malts Selection

REF: 5217

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 56.90%

Although the peat was not as excessive as in earlier years, 1977 still saw the production of some stellar whisky at Brora. Big, fat, oily and phenolic whisky with a wonderfully fine line between farmyard and coastal characteristics. This Rare Malts bottling from way back in 1998 is a bit of an overlooked classic.

Balblair 10 Year Old | Gordon & MacPhail

REF: 5341

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Gordon & MacPhail 75cl / 40%

A 10yo Balblair bottled by G&M in the 1970s. This is a wonderful example of old school, coastal highland malt whisky, a style that barely exists anymore. This is every bit as good as some other big name bottlings from this era that cost literally hundreds of pounds more.

Balblair 10 Year Old | Gordon & MacPhail

REF: 5343

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Gordon & Macphail 75cl / 40%

Another great Old Balblair by G&M, this one hails from slightly later in the seventies and is bursting with clean and fresh sherry characters. Fantastically fulsome malt with bags of flavour and coastal bite, well worth trying if you're into old style whiskies.

Glenturret 15 Year Old

REF: 5350

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 75cl / 40%

An old 15yo Glenturret from the early 1990s. This should be a nice example of a softer more honied Highland style malt.

Glenesk Maltings | 25th Anniversary

REF: 5795

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

A 1969 Glenesk specially selected and bottled at natural strength to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Glenesk Maltings. This one is pretty rare and a fantastically ballsy, natural style dram to boot. They evidently knew how to celebrate in style at the maltings.

Tomatin 10 Year Old | 70 Proof

REF: 5868

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 26 2/3 Fl. ozs / 70 Proof

Lots of lean green fruits, hints of wax and notes of porridge, cereals and herbs are common in old official Tomatins from this era. Bottlings like this that are not from 'big name' distilleries are excellent value snapshots of older style malt whisky.
