Pointers Battle of Trafalgar 200th Anniversary Rum Decanter
Ref: 456
The Battle of Trafalgar was fought off Cape Trafalgar on the Spanish coast on the 21st October in the year 1805 between the English fleet, commanded by Admiral Nelson, and the combined French and Spanish fleets, commanded by Admiral Villeneuve. It was the last great sea action of the period and its significance to the outcome of the war in Europe is still debated by historians. The first stage of the battle saw HMS Victory leading a full frontal attack while the rest of Nelson's fleet attacked at right angles to break through the lines of enemy ships, thus cutting off their retreat. This tactic was in complete variance with all the accepted rules of naval warfare at that time. The English, although vastly out-numbered, gained a decisive victory and ended Napileon Bonaparte's dreams of complete domination of Europe. The paintings on this decanter have been specially commissioned by Pointers of London and Edinburgh: the artist being David Griffin. Pointers have sole rights to the artwork.
